Even for the classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods There is a great need to publish the wealth of numismatic material found in Turkish museums and collections, especially as these continue to grow exponentially, largely as a result of the widespread use of metal detectors in recent years. In addition, the visit to Bolvadin provided the opportunity to view two private collections from which just over 100 relevant pieces were studied, so that in total 285 coins were recorded we made casts of them all for future reference and for photographic purposes. Appendix I lists some coins in Afyon Museum that are reported to have been found in the Bolvadin area. Indeed, we gained the impression from the material still in Bolvadin that the best coins from the collection had been probably been transferred to Afyon some years earlier. Which we thought worth studying in order to offer some comparison with material found at Amorion and also to provide a supplement to the catalogue of the coin collection in the Afyon Archaeological Museum6. The municipal museum houses a small coin collection comprising 182 specimens from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic periods, Many stones from the ancient site can now be seen in the Bolvadin municipal museum, while others are built into the old Turkish buildings of the modern town5. The site of Polybotos lies 5 km to the west of the modern town at a place known as Durayeri4. In antiquity the major site in the vicinity was Polybotos, which some scholars have tried to identify with the city of Iulia. More specifically, it should be regarded as part of the work associated with the excavations at the ancient and Byzantine city of Amorion3.īolvadin is situated in the Turkish province of Afyon in central Anatolia. It is intended as a contribution to the current Turco-British project of numismatic research and publication, in the course of which finds of hoards are reported, excavation and survey material is recorded, and museum catalogues are compiled2. This catalogue is the result of a brief visit by Ashton and Lightfoot to Bolvadin in early June 19971. Richard ASHTON, Chris LIGHTFOOT and Adil OZMEĪNCIENT AND MEDIAEVAL COINS IN BOLVADÎN (TURKEY)
